LESSON
PLAN
8

Overall Aims:

  • Use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied.
  • Use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world

Proposed Bridges

Comparing satellite images and ordinance survey maps as part of studying bridges across the Thames.

In January 2016, Wandsworth Council is considering giving permission for a new bridge over the River Thames to join Nine Elms (on the South bank) and Plimico (on the North bank). It will be a pedestrian and cycle bridge situated between Chelsea Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge, very close to the rebuilt Battersea Power Station.

  1. Look at the maps, drawings and photos of this area. Then look at an online map or an Ordnance Survey map. Use your geographical skills to create a presentation using the photos in this resource with LGFL Appmaker about the proposed bridge and state what some of the issues the Council will need to consider.

  2. Think about how Nine Elms is changing with the building of the new American Embassy (due to open early 2017) and other high rise buildings at Battersea Power Station, what the demand for a bridge will be, and what will the impact be on both the river and the banks, particularly for option 1 shown in the map below

Pimlico Gardens is directly opposite the new American Embassy in Nine Elms.

  3. You may also like to research the Garden Bridge, another new pedestrian bridge proposed to join the National Theatre on the Southbank and Temple Underground Station in the City of London. This bridge has been quite controversial, find out why.
